Scouting Report

Laina is a dynamic forward, with a solid game inside and out. She is strongest getting quick seals to put herself in a position to score with her back to the basket. She utilizes her strength to outwork smaller opponents and her quickness against larger opponents. Laina is a high anticipator on both offense and defense which enables her to put herself in position to rack up steals on defense and rebounds on the offensive end. Most of all, Laina is known for her non-stop motor which makes her exhausting to guard but fun to play alongside.

“Her motor, her rebounding, her ability to score is going to be a big asset, and she is going to do some great things over there.”

-Kari Pickens, Ashland Women’s Basketball current Head Coach

“Laina is a great mix of both ability and hard work. I think something that really separates her as a player is her incredible motor and competitive spirit. She has the ability to play all over the court on both the offensive and defensive side of the court and impacts the game in every possible way.”

-Robyn Fralick, Ashland Women’s Basketball Head Coach (2015-2018)

College Career

Laina graduated in May 2018 from Ashland University in Ohio, USA which is also the state in which she resides from. She was a 4 year starter of the AU Women’s Basketball team and served as team captain her Senior Year.

During her 4 year career as an NCAA Division II athlete, she set the school career records for Points, Rebounds, and Steals tallying 2,295 pts, 1,207 rbs, and 372 stls. She was a key component on the 2017 National Championship team and led her team to a 2018 National Runner-up title. During her time at Ashland, she alternated between the 4 and 5 positions impacting the game by scoring down low, attacking or feeding the post from outside, and causing havoc as the front man of their full-court trapping press.

Professional Career

Laina was first called overseas at the beginning of 2019 to play for the Willetton Basketball Association in the Women’s State Basketball League (WSBL) located in Western Australia. She adjusted quickly to the style of play receiving WSBL Player of the Week honors twice in her first month of play which also landed her a starting spot on the WSBL All-Star team. Laina continued to be a force inside as she always had, but also tackled many roles as her team needed including guard play where she was able to expand her game even more.

After leading the team to a 5th Place finish in the league, Laina went straight to Germany to begin her European campaign in the 2. Damen Basketball Bundesliga – North (2.DBBL). There she brought a spark and experience to an otherwise young team where she was able to put her leadership role from Ashland back to use to guide the developing team. Laina again was a force down low but with two strong 5’s already balancing the team, she played mostly at the 4 spot running the floor and creating shots for herself or opening up space for her teammates. She was a key factor in the team holding a 1st place position in the 2.DBBL throughout most of the season but was held short to claiming the title due to COVID19.
